Let’s
We Back To The Role Play!
In fact, there are lots of teaching
techniques and methods in learning process. All of them have their own strength in teaching process especially in teaching speaking. But not all of techniques
are effective in improving students speaking skill. Why does it happen? It happens because the techniques are
not used the interest and pleasure thing in learning process. One of recommended teaching techniques to
implement in teaching speaking is role play. Implementing role play can help us
in teaching speaking. Is it true? The answer is true, it is because the
technique has the pleasure thing in teaching speaking. There are some benefits
that you will get if you implement it in your class. First, you can make your
students happy in learning speaking. Then, you will make them brave to speak up
in front of their classmates. Last, you
will also improve their verbal and non-verbal communication.
There are many researchers argue that role
play has the pleasure element in teaching speaking class. Jill Hadfield (1986) argues that role playing or role
play is a kind of motion games. This kind of method has the purposes, the rule,
and at the same time involve an element of pleasure. That’s why if you implement
this one, you can make your students happy in mastering speaking skill. It is
true because your students will interact and act each other by using English. On
the other word, it is also effective in teaching speaking because your students
will have fun when they learn it. So, the more fun the methods that you
implement in speaking class, the more interest your student about the material
that you give. This is correct, isn’t it?
When you
implement role play in your speaking class, believe it or not you will change
your students braveness in speaking better. Here is the reason why it is true.
When you implement this fun teaching speaking technique, of course you will ask
all of your students to speak up in English by considering the fluency and
accuracy. Unconsciously, that will practice their speaking, isn’t it? Not only
that, they also trainee as mentally. Their mental automatically trained because
they should be able to perform in front of their friend. It is not easy, right?
That’s will challenge them to become the brave one. So, there is no reason for
us not to use this interesting technique.
Do you believe
that by using role play you will improve your students verbal and non-verbal
communication? You have to believe it, why? The reason is because the technique
consist of some rules. First, they should be able to speak up in front of the
people without doubt. Automatically, they must deliver the message of the role
play dialog by using verbal communication to make the audience get the meaning.
Not only that one, by implementing this teaching technique you will also improve
your student’s non-verbal communication. Automatically, when they try to
delivered the message of the role play by verbal communication, they also use
non-verbal like doing some gesture or body language. The purpose is to make
their performance interesting and to make their audience understand about the
meaning.
Briefly, to find out the technique that consist the pleasure element is
not easy as we thought. But role play has it. There are lots of advantages you
will get if you implement it in your speaking class like what I have mentioned
above. Again, the more fun teaching technique that you use in your class, the happier
your students in learning. So, because of their happiness that will make them
easy in mastering the material because they love it.
